According to the Chicago Sun Times,

Mikal Smith, Lovie’s son is going to serve as an assistant to the head coach and he’s also helping his father with the nickel defense. Smith had been a defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator at Trinity International in Deerfield.

Mikal had this to say:

“I’m very excited, I’m getting a chance to learn from the best in the business — not just him but the whole staff.”

Lovie had this to say:

“He has been around the game all his life, I needed an assistant, somebody I could trust, knew a little football.”

This is an interesting move by the Bears, I guess they have plans to keep Lovie for many more seasons.

Don’t get me wrong Lovie is a good coach, but he is too much of a nice guy, the Bears need a coach who takes charge in certain situations. This is a big season for Lovie because he took over the defensive coaching duties.
