Speak Up: Hunter Hillenmeyer Talks About Time With Bears

LB Hunter Hillenmeyer has spent eight seasons with the Bears, but his latest concussion has caused him to be released. His time with the Bears is over, but will he continuing playing?

Hunter talked to the Chicago Tribune about lots of things Bears related. Here’s what he had to say:

“I have nothing but the utmost respect for the Bears organization. I do not leave this franchise bitter or feeling slighted by anyone in the building. In truth, I’ve known this day was coming since I landed on IR back in September. In that conversation with Lovie (Smith), he acknowledged that having been made aware of my history, and the number of concussions I had sustained on his watch, that he could not be a part of forcing me back out on the field.
“While at the time I was frustrated with such an abrupt end to my season, I have sought out and continue to seek the medical opinions of the best doctors in country as it relates to brain health and concussions. I am yet to find one that thinks it is a good idea to continue playing football. In hindsight, that makes me grateful that Lovie cared enough about me specifically, but really any player, to take that decision away as it pertains to a medical issue.”

“Barring some unforeseen turn of events, I don’t think there was a set of circumstances where I would have been cleared to play next season anyway. The more we pull back the curtain on the long-term effects of head injury, the scarier it gets for players in my position, who have multiple diagnosed concussions and countless more ‘dings’ and headaches. On one hand, I feel lucky to have been relatively candid about my symptoms compared to some colleagues who do everything they can to conceal their struggles. I can only thank the Bears organization, from the trainers and the doctors up to Lovie and Jerry (Angelo), for trying to be proactive in the way concussions are handled. On the other hand, any player who tells you they aren’t affected by the tragic stories like Dave Duerson’s, that seem to be popping up all too often, are lying.”

“I’d like to thank coach (Bob) Babich, my linebacker coach for most of my eight years here, for playing as integral a role as anyone in my development as a player. It’s been an honor to play for such a professional staff and with such outstanding teammates. We had a very special group in our linebacker room. While I was always like Ringo of the Beatles, next to such a talented pair, I think we have had the best and deepest linebacking corps in the NFL for a long time. As long as Lance (Briggs) and Brian (Urlacher) are out there together, expect the Bear’s defense to remain elite.”

“While I won’t be filing any retirement papers tomorrow, if I’ve played my last football game, I’m glad it was with the Bears. Even though I was drafted elsewhere, I have absolutely loved my time as Bear. I love the city, I love the culture; the fans here make it especially easy to feel very at home in Chicago. I think guys like me who spend all of their career here don’t realize how good they’ve got it. It’s been a great ride nonetheless.”

Speak Up: Smith Talks About Release of Tommie Harris

Lovie Smith talked about the release of Tommie Harris, he said it had to be done. This is what he said:

“That’s just a part of our business,” Smith said Monday during a break at the NFL scouting combine. “Of course, Tommie is my first recruit. But at the same time, we’re both moving in different directions.

“Tommie still has a future. He’s just going to have it with someone else.”

Report: Bears Release DT Tommie Harris and Two Others

The Chicago Bears have been making some moves lately. They signed Lovie Smith to a contract extension to keep him with the team till 2013 last week. They put out a tender offer for Danieal Manning yesterday and today they terminated the contract of three veteran players.

DT Tommie Harris, LB Hunter Hillenmeyer and T Kevin Shaffer were all released today. Harris has spent his seven NFL seasons with the Bears. Harris was owed $2.5 million on June 1, but the Bears obviously didn’t think he was worth it.

Henry Melton, Matt Toeaina, Anthony Adams (RFA), and Marcus Harrison are all defensive tackles the Bears will have next season.

Harris should find work somewhere else, but he is clearly not the same player since all of his knee surgeries.

Another familiar face released was LB Hunter Hillenmeyer. Hillenmeyer has spent his eight NFL seasons with the Bears appearing in 101 games making 384 tackles, seven sacks and two interceptions. Hillenmeyer suffered a concussion in pre-season and was put on IR after that. Hillenmeyer, 30, contemplated retirement after the latest concussion.

If he is healthy, I don’t see why one of the 31 other teams wouldn’t pick him up. It’s sad to see him and Tommie go, but it will save them money in areas that they need to upgrade.

The other player released was veteran tackle Kevin Shaffer. Shaffer appeared in 32 games, making seven starts in two seasons with the Bears.

He was clearly slowing down this season and the Bears could be in the market for a veteran tackle, so releasing Shaffer could pave the way for that.

Three releases by the Bears shakes things up for the upcoming season. I personally thought they would keep Tommie Harris, but it could be a good move considering they don’t have to pay him almost $5 million this season.

Good luck to all three of these players, it was great seeing you support the blue and orange. Thank you Tommie and Hunter especially for helping us make that Super Bowl run in 2006. Can’t wait to see you out on the field again, unfortunately with another team.

Don Banks Of SI.com Predicts The Bears Will Take WR With First Pick

The Bears will likely select offensive lineman or defensive line with their first pick at # 29. Sports Illustrated writer Don Banks thinks the Bears will choose a wide receiver with their first round selection.

With that pick, Banks thinks they will pick WR Jonathan Baldwin out of the University of Pittsburgh. I think OL, DL, and CB are needs for the Bears in this draft. WR is more of a want, but a big wide receiver like Baldwin brought into the mix wouldn’t hurt at all.

Here’s what Banks had to say about the Bears potential pick at #29:

“Unless the Bears are confident they’re going to address their need for a big receiver in free agency — if it even unfolds this offseason — the first round of the draft might be their best chance to fill that void. Baldwin is on the bubble between a first- and second-round grade, but he’s big, fast and knows how to come down with the football in traffic.”

Did You Know? 2-23-11

Jim Keane set the Bears record for most receptions in a game with 14 in a 35-28 road loss to the New York Giants on Oct. 23, 1949. Two Bears players have had 13 catches in a game: Mike Ditka in 1964 and Bobby Engram in 1999.

Did You Know? 2-15-11

The Bears are one of eight teams that have won at least four division championships in the last 10 years. The Patriots (8) have the most titles, followed by the Colts (7), Steelers (6), Eagles (6), Chargers (5), Seahawks (5), Bears (4) and Packers (4).

Six teams have failed to win a division crown since 2001: the Bills, Browns, Texans, Jaguars, Redskins and Lions. The most turnover has occurred in the NFC South, where all four teams—the Falcons, Saints, Panthers and Buccaneers—each won one title from 2003-06 and again from 2007-10.

Veteran Punter Brad Maynard To Be Replaced?

14 year NFL veteran Brad Maynard has been very good at pinning opponents inside their own 20-yard line in his career with the Bears, but he might not be back in Chicago next season.

Maynard is a unrestricted free agent this off-season, he is among 14 free agents for the Bears.

Maynard is 37 years old and is considered one of the best directional kickers in the NFL right now. Maynard has averaged 41.9 yards per punt in his 14 seasons. He has pinned opponents inside their own 20, 407 times and has pinned them inside their own 10, 129 times in his career.

His 24 punts inside the 20-yard line were the second most since the NFL starting keeping the statistic in 1976. Although his 40.1 yards per punt this season ranked near the bottom of the league

Will the Bears re-sign Maynard?

Maybe not because the Bears are expected to bring punter Richmond McGee in for a third straight off-season. A league source reports that the Bears are not ruling out re-signing Maynard, but if he asks for too much money expect the Bears to let him go.

Maynard has been steady alongside kicker Robbie Gould and long-snapper Patrick Mannelly on special teams. The Bears should think about this move because Maynard has become a solid punter and still has plenty of years left in him.

Jay Cutler Proposing To Former “The Hills” Star Kristin Cavallari?

According to Terezowens.com, Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is about to pop the question to former “The Hills” star Kristin Cavallari.

The site had this to say about Jay Cutler’s idea:

Jay Cutler and Kristin Cavallari met last Summer in Chicago…The former Hills star and the Chicago Bears QB have been hanging out ever since, and are about to take their relationship to the next level…My sources are telling me Jay is planning on popping the question to Cavallari…Cutler has been spotted ring shopping in Beverly Hills…Cutler and Cavallari have grown extremely close the last several weeks after Jay crapped out in the NFC Championship game…Not sure if he could even get down on one knee at this point…but I just hope Jay doesn’t bring his bad body language to his wedding.

All quotes from Terezowens.com

Is this a bad idea for quarterback Jay Cutler considering all the scrutiny he has been under since the NFC Championship loss against the what would be the Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers. Should he be more focused on football at this point or does this potentially make him more mature?

What do you think?
