Darrell McClover came into the NFL in 2004 as a seventh-round pick out of the University of Miami by the New York Jets.
McClover spent his first three seasons at the University of Miami playing as a reserve linebacker behind linebackers like Dan Morgan and Chris Campbell. He shined in his senior year playing alongside NFL stars Jonathan Vilma and D.J. Williams.
In McClover’s first season in the NFL he started all 16 games making 15 tackles. Unfortunately he didn’t see any playing time with the Jets in the 05-06 season and was let go after the season was over.
The Bears signed him that off-season and McClover played in 35 games making 27 tackles as a special teams ace from 2006-2010. McClover never got a shot to start at linebacker for the Bears, but I’m sure the Bears would welcome him back with open arms if the opportunity was there.
Considering McClover is a free-agent, the Bears could add him because he fits into the system they run on defense and special teams.
I had the chance to catch up with Darrell last week and I asked him about everything from the NFL lockout, how Lovie Smith runs practices and what he plans on doing once he retires.
Here’s the interview with former Bears LB Darrell McClover. Exclusively on Bearsbacker.com:
Q: How tough has the lockout been on you? How often have you been training and conditioning?
A: The lock out has been pretty tough, but at the same time beneficial. Especially looking at the way my career has been going this past year. It has pushed me to spend more time into looking at life after football. I train and condition three to five times a week.
Q: Have you gotten together with any players this off-season to train? Who have you stayed in contact with?
A: I haven’t gotten together with any players to condition. My training consist of my own personal regiment. Players who I have stayed in contact with have been Rod Wilson, Nick Roach, Tim Shaw.
Q: Who was your favorite player growing up? Or did you just have a favorite team?
A: I didn’t have a favorite player. My favorite team growing up was the Indianapolis Colts.
Q: Do you stay informed on what’s going on or do you usually wait until something big happens?
A: I stay informed on issues and concerns during the NFL lockout because it not only affects active players but also retired players as well. So its good stay up to date.
Q: What is your most favorite and least favorite part of football?
A: My most favorite thing about football are the playing the games. My least favorite thing about football are the meetings.
Q: What is your most memorable moment in football? What level did it occur in?
A: My most memorable moment was in the NFL, coming out of the tunnel during the Super Bowl. There’s nothing like it.
Q:What’s a fact that maybe some people don’t know about you?
A: I can sing.
Q: What’s different about Chicago compared to the other teams you’ve played for?
A: The difference are the fans, they make Chicago a fun place to play.
Q: Who are your closest friends on the team or around the NFL?
A: Jonathon Vilma, Tim Shaw, and Rod Wilson.
Q: How does Lovie Smith run practices? Is he that quiet guy that the media claims he is?
A: Lovie says very few words on the field, but in the classroom he is very knowledgeable. He holds us accountable for our roles and jobs.
Q: If you weren’t a professional football player, what profession do you think you’d be in?
A: Human resources.
Q: How great was it to play with Jonathan Vilma and D.J. Williams at the University of Miami? Does it feel like a long time ago?
A: Playing with DJ and JV was great. I remember when we came in as freshman at UM. It definitely doesn’t seem like that long ago.
Q: Favorite movie?
A: New (Inception) great movie.
Q: Favorite food/meal?
A: Nice fish filet ( does not matter as long as its good).
Q: What do you plan on doing when your career is over? What do you hope to get out of the NFL?
A: When my career is over, I hope to live comfortable and take up a career in personal training. I’d like to manage my own gym. I hope to be able to have a nice life once it’s over.
Q: You’re pretty active on Twitter, do you enjoy social networks?
A: I just started getting into it. I felt like it was time to stop avoiding it. It seems like everything is gravitating to it. Also I was recommended to do it.
Q: Who do you thank for getting to this point?
I thank my dad for his support growing up, my wife and all my coaches.
Q: Thanks for your time, hope to see you in the blue and orange this season.
A: Thanks for having me.

Brian Urlacher hasn’t had much to do this off-season besides workout and worry about when the lockout is going to end.
So nobody was shocked when he had a lot to say. He touched on Dhani Jones’s comments, Soldier Field’s grass situation and the Bears trip to London this season.
Here’s what Urlacher had to say about those things:
Respone to Dhani Jones: “I think we were drafted in the same class, right? Is he a 2000 guy? I haven’t heard anything about him since then. I saw him on a TV show with a bow-tie on though. So I know him better for how the way he dresses than what he does on a football field. Guys are going to talk. I’ve definitely had a lot worse things said publicly from guys, so I can live with it.”
Talking about if the grass at Soldier Field gives the Bears an advantage: “No. You’re both playing on it. The weather I think is the biggest advantage we have against teams that don’t play in our weather. But we’re a fast defense. You put us on that FieldTurf eight home games a year? We’re going to be really fast. You put [Julius] Peppers on that turf? [Devin] Hester, with all those cuts on turf? [Johnny] Knox? All those guys. We’re going to be a little better, I think. Faster.”
Talking about if he was excited to travel to London to face the Bucs: “No, I’m not excited to go to London. … I don’t understand why they do that. … I am not excited to go to London, I will say that.” I can’t imagine many players would be, considering the travel involved and disruption to their weekly schedule.”

Here’s your video of the day, I thought Brian Urlacher’s cameo on Entourage last season would interest you after reading about Mike Ditka’s upcoming cameo this season.
Enjoy.

Former Bears head coach and Hall of Fame tight end Mike Ditka will appear on the final episode of HBO’s comedy Entourage this season.
Entourage is entering it’s eighth and final season and they often have celebrities and athletes make cameos.
Brian Urlacher made a short cameo last season.
Here’s what Ditka had to say about the cameo:
“This just came up spur of the moment, and actually you know, it was a good experience,” Ditka said, via ESPN Chicago. “I didn’t realize how big a deal it was, I’ll be honest with you. I’m kinda naïve about those things, and I understand it is a pretty big deal, and yes, I think it is very nice and Coach Alvarez is on it with me so both of us are there.”
Ditka joins Barry Alvarez the athletic director at Wisconsin in the scene. Hopefully Ditka is better in Entourage then he was as a coach with the New Orleans Saints in the late 90′s.
Don’t forget to tune in to the eighth and final season of Entourage on July 24th.

Linebacker Dhani Jones an 11-year veteran for the Cincinnati Bengals listed himself at No. 7 last week on NFL Network list of top ten linebackers, but left off seven-time Pro Bowler Brian Urlacher. His answer to why Urlacher was left off the list, Jones replied, “When is the last time Brian Urlacher got off a block?”
Bears LB Nick Roach took Jones’ negative talk about Urlacher to heart.
Here’s what Roach had to say about Jones’ comments and Urlacher’s legacy:
“It’s just funny for somebody to say Urlacher can’t get off a block,” Roach told ESPNChicago.com. “I just have to laugh at things like that because clearly, you’re talking about a multi-time Pro Bowler, who gets talked about in terms of when he is going to make the Hall of Fame, not if. For a player to ask when the last time Urlacher got off a block, to me, that’s just a funny thing to say.
“How can you say he can’t get off a block based on the number of tackles he makes? People who don’t know what they’re looking at might say that, just because teams do have to scheme for Brian, so if a team has a lineman come up and block him and a fullback comes after him, then he might not make a tackle on a certain play. But offenses are preparing for him, in addition to our entire defense, so teams are trying to figure out how they can prevent Brian from making this play. But look at this productivity over all those years.”
“I would have a hard time saying he’s not a Top-10 linebacker just off his résumé alone,” Roach said. “I think it’s hard to leave him off that list whether you really like him or not. His production speaks for itself.
“But Urlacher’s importance to the team and to our defense goes far beyond stats. He is so vital to our defense, that’s way more important to his number of tackles or number of interceptions. Having him out there with us keeps us so revved up, I mean, he’s a great teammate all the way around. Anybody who’s played with him would say that.”
Extra Thoughts:
Honestly where does Dhani Jones get off. He has been on three teams in 11 years and has never once been voted to the Pro Bowl. Urlacher has been there seven times.
I know Jones is a media friendly guy, who has been involved in commercials, television shows and other sports, but he isn’t right on this one. Jones is a very good player, but he is nothing like Urlacher.
For Jones to rate himself ahead of Urlacher is a joke. I can understand to a certain degree where he could leave off Urlacher from the list, but for him to put himself over Urlacher is ridiculous.
This will only give Urlacher more motivation heading into the season. Urlacher is a guy who won’t make a big deal out of this, but the media will likely make this a big deal considering the lack of coverage out of the NFL.
Urlacher should just shake it off and focus on what’s ahead of him. This could be Urlacher’s last “real” season in the NFL. By real, I mean a good season because Urlacher is not getting any younger at age 33.
