Did You Know? 11-29-11

In passing for 254 yards, Bears quarterback Caleb Hanie became the first NFL quarterback to throw for more than 250 yards and rush for over 50 yards in his first career start since the Vikings’ Rich Gannon on Sept. 30, 1990.

Hanie’s 50 yards on the ground were the most by a Bears quarterback since Kordell Stewart had 52 on Oct. 5, 2003 also against the Raiders.

Week 13 NFL Power Rankings, Chicago Bears Edition

Here are the Week 13 Bears power rankings from various sites around the web:

Site This Week/Last Week Analysis
ESPN 12 (7) Caleb Hanie did as expected against the Raiders, and that has to worry the Bears as they vie for a playoff spot.
NFL.com 10 (8) Great throw on the touchdown to Johnny Knox, Caleb Hanie. Beautiful ball on the 81-yarder to Knox in the fourth quarter, as well. But Hanie made too many mistakes, mostly in the decision-making area. The defense consistently was put behind the eight-ball by an offense that either turned the ball over or couldn’t get much going. Despite all the yardage allowed, the defense did a pretty good job shutting down the Raiders in the red zone. Coming up are two very manageable games versus the Chiefs and Broncos. The key is for Hanie not to turn the ball over, and for offensive coordinator Mike Martz to create opportunities in the running game.
Fox Sports 12 (7) The Bears did themselves no favors with the offensive play calling on Sunday. They struggle to find an offensive rhythm when Jay Cutler has to throw it more than 30 times per game, let alone backup Caleb Hanie. Matt Forte needs many more than 12 carries, and when he gets tired, Marion Barber III can carry the load. But Hanie throwing it 36 times is absurd.
CBS Sports 12 (8) The Caleb Hanie era didn’t get off to a good start, but it wasn’t a total disaster. He made some nice plays, but just not enough of them.
Pro Football Talk 10 (7) Caleb Hanie’s hiney soon will be back on the bench.
Pro Football Weekly 13 (8) Hanie’s first start didn’t give many glimpses of hope for Bears fans.
WEEI.com 11 (8) The offensive play-calling that had second-string QB Caleb Hanie throw 36 times is inexplicable. Can anyone explain why Lovie Smith and Mike Martz thought it was a good idea to put the backup quarterback in a position to lose the game and at the same time give Matt Forte just 12 carries? Going into the game, an educated football observer would think the pro-bowl running back would see an increase in touches after Cutler went down; however Forte saw his fewest carries since Week 3.

Bears Fan Sends WR Earl Bennett Money To Pay For Recent Fine

A Bears fan sent wide receiver Earl Bennett a check worth $100 to Bennett today for his recent fines.

Bennett was fined recently for his bright orange shoes that were said to be not part of the normal uniform by NFL officials.

Bennett tweeted this picture of the check earlier today.

Is this too extreme or would you do the same thing?

Game Recap: Hanie’s Turnovers Prove Costly As Bears Fall In Oakland

Caleb Hanie completed 18 of 36 pass attempts for 254 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions in a 25-20 loss to Oakland on Sunday.

His completion percentage was 50 percent, while his QB rating was 56.9.

All three of his interceptions came in the first half; luckily, the Bears defense held the Raiders to only six points off those mistakes by Hanie.

His last interception came on a 2nd-and-1 play with under 30 seconds left in the second quarter.

The Bears were having success offensively after WR Johnny Knox returned a kickoff 56 yards, but then, offensive coordinator Mike Martz called up a throwback screen to TE Kellen Davis.

Hanie didn’t execute it very well after Raiders linebacker Aaron Curry came in to break it up.

Kameron Wimbley caught the ball off the tip and was able to return it 73 yards before Bears right tackle Lance Louis ripped him down.

“I got it over the first guy (Wimbley), which is how it usually works out in practice … there’s one guy in front between you and him, you get it over him and it’s a touchdown normally,” Hanie said after the game.

Coach Martz needs to run better plays for the young quarterback Hanie. Hanie made crucial mistakes in the first half because of his lack of experience.

Martz needs to draw up plays that help him out. This isn’t Jay Cutler out there throwing passes; this is fourth-year quarterback Caleb Hanie, who, before Sunday, never started an NFL regular season game.

Hanie settled into the game in the second half, but the three interceptions turned out to be costly. The Bears don’t tend to win when they don’t win the turnover battle either.

I’m not blaming coach Martz entirely, but he needs to know that with an inexperienced quarterback, you can only do so much.

The running game had perhaps their best game of the season with 172 net yards on the ground, so maybe more running plays could be in the playbook moving forward.

Marion Barber had 63 yards, Forte had 59 yards and Hanie had 50 yards as well.

Consider that 126 yards passing for Hanie came with 3:47 left in the game. Eighty-one yards came on the bomb to Johnny Knox during their second half touchdown drive.

The Bears didn’t let him unleash long passes after he faltered on a pass in double coverage to Matt Forte in the first half that was intercepted.

Teams will know that Hanie likes to scramble to his right, so expect defenses to force him to his left.

Considering it was his first start on the road against a very good Oakland team, it wasn’t the worst performance.

The turnovers have to go, and Lovie Smith is expecting to see a much-improved Hanie next Sunday at home against the Chiefs.

Hanie definitely showed some flashes of good play in this game, but with a healthy Jay Cutler you’d think they would have won that game.

You can’t alter what the Raiders did on special teams with their kicker, Sebastian Janikowski, booting six field goals and their punter Shane Lechler (Seabass) averaging 54.6 yards on punts, including a 80-yard blast.

What you can alter is the turnovers by the raw quarterback Hanie. With a healthy Cutler, most of those mistakes wouldn’t have been there.

The Bears can’t say what if; they need to move on and build off of Hanie’s second half performance, which was pretty solid.

Did he really just do that?

Hanie needs to know when to spike it, because the final play turned into intentional grounding after he took too long to spike it.

He also stepped out of bounds instead of throwing the ball away, which turned into a sack by the Raiders.

Most of those little mistakes should be fixed with time and experience.

Monsters of the Midway

The score was 12-7 at the half despite Hanie’s three interceptions.

The defense played pretty efficient not allowing a touchdown until under four minutes left in the game.

Julius Peppers posted two sacks, while Henry Melton and Amobi Okoye each brought Carson Palmer down. Nickelback Corey Graham reeled in his third interception of the season.

Safety Major Wright led all defenders with six tackles, while defensive end Chauncey Davis posted four tackles in his Bears debut.

Cornerback Tim Jennings did a solid job all day in coverage, putting himself in position to reel in a couple interceptions.

Only a couple breakdowns in coverage happened on this day.

FB Marcel Reece and WR Louis Murphy both reeled in 47-yard passes. Murphy’s catch help set up the Raiders touchdown drive, which ultimately put the game away.

Charles Tillman made a great play off the two-minute warning on the Bears onside kick try, but the Bears just couldn’t come up with it.

The Bears defense isn’t at fault in this loss; the turnovers were simply too much to overcome.

The Raiders needed this game more than the Bears considering Tim Tebow and the Broncos have been on fire as of late in the AFC West.

What now?

The Bears still have the No. 5 spot in the wildcard because of the loss by the Lions on Thanksgiving day. Atlanta sits at (7-4), Detroit sits at (7-4) and the New York Giants (6-4) in the wildcard race.

The next three games for the Bears are against the Chiefs, Broncos and Seahawks. The Chiefs and Seahawks matchups are at Soldier Field, while the Broncos game is in Denver.

Those could all be wins for the Bears, which would put them at 10 on the season. Ten wins could get you in as a wildcard team in the NFC.

Quick Tuneup

Hanie and the offense will come out more prepared on Sunday against the Chiefs. Coach Martz needs to call up simpler plays for the inexperienced quarterback.

Look for the Bears to bounce back next week after a disappointing loss in Oakland.

Week 12 Game Preview: Chicago Bears @ Oakland Raiders

The Chicago Bears (7-3) and the Oakland Raiders (6-4) will meet for the 13th time ever today in Oakland.

The all-time series between the two teams is tied 6-6.

The Bears were able to beat the Raiders the last time these teams met in 2007, 17-6.

The last time these two teams met in Oakland was in 1999, when the Raiders won 24-17.

The Bears are on a five game winning streak, while the Raiders are on a two game winning streak.

The Raiders have won both games on the road. They haven’t been that great on their home turf going 2-3 so far this season at home.

The Bears are 2-2 on the road, but have won their last two road games.

This could be a good time for the Bears to get things going on the road. Four of their last six games of the season are away from Soldier Field.

The Raiders will be without wide receivers Jacoby Ford and Denarius Moore. Darrius Heyward-Bey is a game-time decision.

RB Darren McFadden, DE Jarvis Moss have both been ruled out of the game.

DT Richard Seymour, DE Lamarr Houston, S Michael Huff and RB Taiwan Jones are all questionable after being limited participants in practice on Friday.

For the Bears, nickelback D.J. Moore is doubtful with an ankle injury. WR/KR Devin Hester is probable with his shin and ankle injuries, but will likely again be used only on special teams.

The Raiders allow an average of 157 yards on the ground at the Oakland Coliseum this season, and are minus-eight in turnover ratio at home.

The Raiders defense ranks 24th in the NFL allowing an average of 371.7 ypg. The Raiders as a team have been penalized a league high 103 times this season.

The Bears 25th ranked defense has forced 11 interceptions over the past four games, including three multiple INT games.

They now have 15 takeaways in the last four games, which is the most in the NFL since Week 7.

The Bears will be focusing on stopping the run because the Raiders will be limited with their receiving core.

A big key for the Raiders is Richard Seymour (5.0 sacks), if he can play their defense will be that much better. The Bears would like to see him on the sideline instead of on the field.

Key Questions:

Can the Bears run the ball effectively with Matt Forte and Marion Barber?

Can Caleb Hanie replace Jay Cutler (thumb) and lead the Bears to a win on the road in his first NFL start?

Can the Raiders pass rush get pressure on Caleb Hanie consistently?

How can the Raiders contain Devin Hester on returns?

Players Who Must Step Up:

1) Amobi Okoye- He recorded only one tackle last week. The pass rush wasn’t very effective until the fourth quarter against the Chargers. Okoye needs to step up because Julius Peppers has been doing it all. Okoye has three sacks through 10 games, he needs to get to the quarterback today.

Prediction: Three tackles, 1.0 sack.

2) Chris Conte- He’s racked up 10 tackles over the last three games, but has only one interception on the season. Major Wright has reeled in three picks the past three games, so maybe Conte gets his chance to shine today. Look for Conte to be active.

Prediction: Five tackles, one interception.

3) Johnny Knox- The leading Bears receiver was with the second team this off-season and Caleb Hanie was throwing him passes. The two have a chemistry that was noticeable in the NFC Championship this past January. Knox had his biggest game of the year last week with three catches for 97 yards and one touchdown. He could be in line for a solid game today.

Prediction: Four catches, 63 yards.

Game Prediction:

Bears 20, Raiders 17.

Expect a party cloudy day in the mid-60′s in Oakland today.

Key Matchup: Bears Pass Rush Against Raiders Offensive Line

The Bears defensive line didn’t put together a very good performance last week against San Diego.

They didn’t really get much pressure on Chargers QB Phillip Rivers until the fourth quarter.

Defensive end Israel Idonije led the defensive line with five tackles.

Amobi Okoye, Henry Melton, Stephen Paea and Corey Wootton all had one tackle each.

Julius Peppers was pretty quiet not showing up on the stat sheet.

He leads the Bears in sacks this season with six, but disrupts quarterbacks in other ways than that.

He gets pressures and hits on quarterbacks and those don’t show up on the box score after a game.

The defense has 18 sacks through 11 games, which ranks 26th in the NFL.

The Bears try not to blitz much, they really just put pressure on quarterbacks with their front four.

Peppers is the most consistent pass rusher on the defense, but others have stepped up at times.

Henry Melton (4.0 sacks) has been used as a defensive tackle and defensive end.

DE Israel Idonije has three sacks, Amobi Okoye has three sacks and Stephen Paea has one sack.

DE Corey Wootton is back to being healthy, and DE Chauncey Davis could be used this week after signing a couple of weeks ago.

The Bears need consistent pressure. That’s just how their defense succeeds.

They were able to win last week because the line stepped up in the fourth quarter, but Charles Tillman and other corners are vulnerable with no pressure added.

Will the Bears be able to get pressure on Carson Palmer?

The Raiders offensive line is fourth in the NFL in sacks allowed (15). But they’ve allowed seven sacks since Carson Palmer took over at quarterback four weeks ago.

The Vikings were able to get to Palmer four times last week, but he still had success threw the air tossing one touchdown and completing 17 of 23 passes.

The Raiders offensive line has allowed 45 quarterback hits, which ranks 13th in the NFL.

The Bears could have a tough time getting to Palmer with the line succeeding as of late for the Raiders.

The Raiders could be running the ball more than usual considering receivers Jacoby Ford, Denarius Moore and Darrius Heyward-Bey could all be out.

Running back Darren McFadden has been ruled out for Sunday, and backup Taiwan Jones is also banged up with a hamstring injury.

Expect the Bears to use eight men in the box more often than none. Carson Palmer will be limited with offensive weapons if those three speed receivers can’t play.

Chaz Schilens, Louis Murphy and T.J. Houshmandzadeh would be the Top 3 receivers.

The Bears should be able to contain running back Michael Bush and could be in luck with the speed receivers for the Raiders either being out or limited.

The defensive line wants to stop the run first, so Palmer will be forced to pass the ball.

Expect a solid mix of blitzes and eight men fronts for the Bears tomorrow in Oakland.

Injury Report Week 12, Chicago Bears Edition

The Bears will be without nickelback D.J. Moore for the second straight week with an ankle injury.

Moore hasn’t been able to practice all week.

WR/KR Devin Hester didn’t practice this week for precautionary reasons with his shin injury.

He is expected to play and get more time on offense. He will be a key on special teams for the Bears all day long.

The Bears opponent this Sunday are the first place Raiders and they are pretty banged up right now. They will be without wide receiver Jacoby Ford (foot), running back Darren McFadden (foot), and defensive end Jarvis Moss (hamstring).

Nine players are questionable, six of them are starters. DT Richard Seymour (knee), WR Derrius Heyward-Bey (neck), WR Denarius Moore (foot), DE Lamarr Houston (knee), safety Michael Huff (ankle), and cornerback Chris Johnson (hamstring/groin) are all questionable.

The other three players are RB Taiwan Jones (hamstring), safety Michael Mitchell (ankle) and running back Manase Tonga (knee) are all questionable.

The Bears should take advantage of the numerous injuries the Raiders have on both sides of the ball.

NFL Week 12 Game Picks, Thanksgiving Edition

The Bears and Raiders don’t play until Sunday,  but Thanksgiving is full of some good action.

The (10-0) Green Bay Packers take on the (7-3) Detroit Lions at 12:30 p.m. ET on FOX.

Then, the Miami Dolphins (3-7) take on the Dallas Cowboys (6-4) at Cowboys Stadium at 4:15 p.m. ET on CBS.

Late tonight, the San Fransisco 49ers (9-1) battle the Baltimore Ravens (7-3) at 8:20 p.m. ET on NFL Network.

The Packers and Lions game has a lot of meaning for the Bears. The Bears are currently three games back of the Packers, but the Lions are fighting with the Bears for a wild card spot.

So, for Bears fans they want the Packers to win despite how much hatred they have towards each other.

I’ll go with the Packers on the road, 30-23.

The Cowboys host the Dolphins, both teams have won three straight games.

The Cowboys are seven point favorites, but the Dolphins have been coming on as of late with Matt Moore leading the offense.

I’ll go with the Dolphins to upset the Cowboys, 27-21.

The night game is the 49ers and Ravens, its the battle of the Harbaugh brothers. Both teams have been pretty good this season.

The Ravens have suffered all of their three losses on the road, while the 49ers only loss came at home.

The Ravens will be tough to beat tonight, I’ll go with Jon Harbaugh and the Ravens 23-17.

Picks:

Overall for Thanksgiving, I have two road winners, Green Bay and Miami and one home winner, Baltimore.

It should be a good day of football, maybe the best day of Thanksgiving football in a long time.

The Bears Knew Cutler’s Thumb Was Broken Moments After Game

According to Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune, everyone in the Bears organization, for some baffling reason, was pretending Cutler wasn’t injured even though his teammates already knew he broke his thumb.

Brian Urlacher and many of the veterans who spoke after the game must have been told to keep their mouth’s shut until the injury was official.

It was a very weird process.

The Bears won, Cutler stepped up to the podium, acted like everything was good after the win and then two hours following the injury news blows up.

The Bears likely didn’t want the word spreading about the injury unless it was 100% official. They could have handled the situation a little bit better.

Cutler update

Cutler is expected to start rehab tomorrow or Friday after undergoing successful surgery to repair his right thumb today in Colorado.
