ESPN 22 (21) Now that they are out of the playoff race, the Bears have to decide about Mike Martz’s future.
Sports Illustrated 21 (22) If you’re a backup quarterback in the NFL, you eventually want your chance to play and prove yourself to be starting material. But be careful what you wish for, because what do you think the market for Caleb Hanie’s services is about now? When he was mostly about projected potential, Hanie had a future. But then he played extensively, played horribly, and proved himself all right. He won’t be Chicago’s No. 2 next season. Count on it. It’s an NFL variation on the old saying: Better to keep your mouth shut and be presumed a fool, then to open it and remove all doubt.
Fox Sports 22 (20) The Bears never really stood a chance with Caleb Hanie at quarterback, and then it was made even worse when running back Matt Forte went down. Without those two players, this becomes an entirely different offensive unit, and I’m not sure they ever really made the necessary adaptations to their ever-changing personnel.
CBS Sports 21 (21) You can’t lose two big pieces of the offense in Jay Cutler and Matt Forte and expect to be any good. They aren’t.
Yahoo Sports 23 (21) So, would all those people who talked up Peyton Manning as this year’s MVP put Jay Cutler second on their ballots?
Pro Football Talk 25 (24) Kahlil Bell may have cost Matt Forte a lot of money.

Week 16 NFL Game Preview: Chicago Bears @ Green Bay Packers

The Chicago Bears (7-7) and the Green Bay Packers (13-1) will play tonight at Lambeau Field.

This marks the second time ever that the Bears and Packers will meet on Christmas night.

The last time they met on Christmas night was in 2005, when the Bears defeated Green Bay, 24-17.

The two teams will battle it out for the 184th time, the Bears lead the all-time series 92-85-6.

The Packers have won three straight games dating back to last season. The Bears will be looking to stop that winning streak by the Packers and keep their slim playoff hopes alive.

The Bears have to win the next two games and the Falcons have to lose the next two games, for Chicago to earn the sixth seed in the NFC.

The chances are so slim with the way the Bears have played as of late.

Veteran QB Josh McCown will make his first start since 2007 tonight.

Caleb Hanie is listed as his backup and rookie Nathan Enderle will be the third quarterback active.

Running back Kahlil Bell will make his second career start with Marion Barber sitting out with a calf injury.

Armando Allen, who the Bears signed off their practice squad will back up Bell.

The wide receiver position will be limited as well with Johnny Knox out and Devin Hester (ankle) still banged up.

Roy Williams, Earl Bennett, Dane Sanzenbacher and Max Komar will be the four receivers the Bears will use the most tonight.

Komar played for Arizona last season and spent most of this season on the Bears practice squad.

The Bears are 11 of 50 on third-down conversions over the past four games. So, maybe Josh McCown and Co. can spark this offense or maybe not.

It will sure be interesting to see what happens tonight.

Either way a Bears-Packers matchup is always meaningful no matter what the two teams records are.

This is an important game for the Bears even though it may not seem that way. They need to find out what they have in many key positions.

Defensive tackle Henry Melton (shin) will likely be out and Lance Briggs (ankle) might not be able to go.

DE Thaddeus Gibson will get his first chance to play after spending the entire season on the practice squad.

Brandon Meriweather and Craig Steltz will be the safeties for the Bears.

Can they be effective? Should either of them be brought for next season?

This will be a big test for the veteran Bears defense and hopefully it helps us evaluate the healthy talent on the Bears roster.

Key Questions:

Can Josh McCown be a solid backup for Cutler next season?

Can Zackary Bowman be a starter at cornerback or is Tim Jennings the answer?

Can Max Komar (WR) or Armando Allen (RB) play well enough to earn a roster spot next season?

Will the Bears offensive line play well?

Players Who Must Step Up:

1) Anthony Adams- He will likely be in the lineup with Melton nursing a shin injury. He needs to show why he is valuable to this team because the Bears have a nice rotation at defensive tackle right now and Adams could quickly find his way out if he can’t perform.

Prediction: Three tackles, 1.o sack.

2) Kellen Davis- He will be a free agent come seasons end, expect him to try to impress tonight. The former defensive end has been a steady blocker at times, but needs to be more consistent to earn a roster spot next season.

Prediction: Three catches, 35 yards.

3) Zack Bowman- He is one of three cornerbacks on the roster, who will be a free agent when the season is over. He needs to show the Bears if he is worth keeping on the roster. The Bears know what they have in Tim Jennings and Corey Graham, but they haven’t seen enough of Bowman lately. He will have to play well to stick around next year.

Prediction: Seven tackles

Final Score:

Packers 23, Bears 13

Did You Know? 12-25-11

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ numbers in last year’s NFC Championship Game at Chicago – 17 for 30 for 244 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions (55.4 rating) were the worst statistical performance of his career in a game that he completed.

Week 16 NFL Power Rankings, Chicago Bears Edition

Here are the Week 16 Bears power rankings from various sites around the web:

Site This Week/Last Week Analysis
ESPN 21 (17) Lovie Smith isn’t ready to announce a QB change, but be ready, Josh McCown.
Fox Sports 20 (18) I don’t mean to single out an individual player, but I am not so sure that QB Caleb Hanie could start on an Arena League team. Without Jay Cutler and Matt Forte on offense, this team doesn’t stand a chance. The defense has holes at the safety position, but I like how they rally to the ball and rarely miss a tackle. Still, they won’t win another game without at least getting Cutler back.
CBS Sports 21 (15) Without Jay Cutler, we knew they would have problems. But did anybody think it would be this bad?
Pro Football Talk 24 (18) Sam Hurd’s arrest was a distraction, after all.  Unless the Bears planned to lose to the Seahawks by 24 points at home.
Pro Football Weekly 21 (16) Now they can’t even salvage season by handing rival Packers first loss.
WEEI.com 21 (17) The Bears have lost four straight games since Jay Cutler went down. Caleb Hanie has thrown three interceptions in three out of his four games he’s started. It’s extremely difficult to win in the NFL when a team loses its turnover battle and the Bears continue to do just that. They’ve turned the ball over 12 times since the Cutler injury.

Game Recap: Bears Season Is Slipping Away After 38-14 Loss To Seattle

The Bears have dropped four straight games.

After going on a five game winning streak and coming together in all three phases, the Bears have dropped out of the NFC playoff picture rather quickly.

Jay Cutler, Matt Forte, Johnny Knox, Chris Conte, and Major Wright have all been seriously injured during the four game skid.

Don’t blame the injuries as the sole problem for the Bears recent losses, but it certainly hasn’t helped.

The coaching has been dreadful and will likely lead to some major changes at Halas Hall next season.

Caleb Hanie has been ineffective tossing nine interceptions in four starts for the injured Cutler.

Veteran Josh McCown relieved Hanie today, but didn’t fair too much better, tossing an interception almost immediately after entering the game in the fourth quarter.

The Bears held a 14-7 at the half after the Bears defense came up with fumble return for a touchdown and Caleb Hanie led the offense down the field for a score.

The third quarter wasn’t friendly for them though. The Seahawks put 21 points on the scoreboard and over 200 yards of offense.

The Bears offense turned the ball over five times. They fell in the game 38-14.

The Bears offense was able to run for 132 yards. Kahlil Bell had 65 yards rushing, while Marion Barber had 33 and Hanie had 34.

Bell also reeled in 43 receiving yards, including a 25 yard touchdown reception.

The Bears travel next week to Lambeau for a Christmas matchup against  the 13-1 Green Bay Packers.

The Packers fell to the Kyle Orton led Chiefs today in Kansas City.

The Bears will likely provide updates on their two injured players from today’s game. Johnny Knox was hit hard and lost a fumble in the first quarter. He was carried out on a stretcher, but was said to have a minor back injury.

Safety Chris Conte left before the first half with what seemed to be a foot injury.

At 7-7 the Bears season isn’t over, but it would be a miracle if they finished at 9-7, even with that the playoffs wouldn’t be a definite.

These next two games are important either way. The Bears need to evaluate everyone in the organization including coaches and their young talent.

Maybe rookie QB Nathan Enderle will get some playing time these next two weeks.

Don’t expect Jay Cutler or Matt Forte to rush back from their serious injuries anytime soon.

The Bears, who were once playoff favorites sitting at 7-3 four weeks ago, are now on the outside looking in.

Every Bears fan should be upset, but change could be coming soon for this organization and that can only be a good thing for this team’s future success.

Week 15 NFL Game Preview: Seattle Seahawks @ Chicago Bears

The Seattle Seahawks (6-7) and Chicago Bears (7-6) will battle it out today at 1 p.m. ET at Soldier Field.

The Bears trail the all-time series 6-8. They played the Seahawks twice last season, both games were in the windy city.

The Seahawks defeated the Bears in the regular season matchup 23-20, but the Bears redeemed themselves by winning the NFC Divisional game over them 35-24.

Seattle comes to town being winners of their last two games and four of their last five.

The Bears on the other hand are watching their season quickly fall apart. They’ve dropped three straight games, all coming against AFC West opponents.

What do the Bears have to do to get out of their funk?

They need to keep drives going and score points early in the game.

The defense will have their hands full with Marshawn Lynch, who has been spectacular as of late.

The Seahawks have rushed for 100 yards or more as a team in six consecutive games, the first time since the 2002 season.

The Bears defense has been stellar allowing only a touchdown a game the past three weeks.

Caleb Hanie was average at best during the game, but he led the Bears right down the field in the overtime drive.

Since Hanie’s taken over the Bears offense has averaged only 11 points per game.

Hanie knows he needs to make better decisions. One of those decisions is completing passes to his best wide receiver Earl Bennett, whose been invisible since Hanie took over.

Wide receiver/kick returner Devin Hester is questionable with a sprained ankle, while defensive tackle Henry Melton is also questionable with a shin injury.

Expect Hester to suit up, but Melton doesn’t seem healthy enough to give it a go.

Key Questions:

Will Earl Bennett get involved in the offense?

Will the Bears be able to create turnovers off of Seahawks QB Tavaris Jackson?

Will Hanie be able to sustain drives for the Bears offense?

Which running back will get more carries, Marion Barber or Kahlil Bell?

Players Who Must Step Up:

1) Earl Bennett- He has two catches for 10 yards the past three games. He needs to get back into the offense. Hanie needs to get him the ball because he only does good things when he gets receptions.

Prediction: Four catches, 35 yards, one touchdown.

2) Brian Urlacher- He is 17 tackles away from an 100 tackle season. He has three interceptions on the season. He made 11 tackles last week in an impressive performance. He knows the importance of this game, so look for him to get this defense ready to go.

Prediction: Nine tackles, 1.0 sack.

3) Stephen Paea- He will likely be seeing more playing time, with Henry Melton on the sideline. The rookie second-round pick has two sacks in eight games. Look for him to make the most of his opportunities today.

Prediction: Four tackles.

Final Score:

Bears 20, Seahawks 13

Key Matchup: Bears Running Game Against Seahawks The Defense

The Chicago Bears offense combined to run for 158 yards last week in Denver.

Marion Barber had 108 yards, while backup Kahlil Bell had 40 yards and quarterback Caleb Hanie had 11 yards.

Barber and Bell had success on the ground, but mistakes in key parts of the games led to the Bears loss.

Barber was pushed out of bounds with under two minutes giving the Broncos another chance.

In overtime, Barber had a huge opening and tried to push through it, but failed to cover up the ball and lost the ball and ultimately the game for the Bears.

Luckily the Bears team was supportive of Barber.

Barber knows he needs to get better.

With one-year left on his contract, the Bears want Barber to succeed, but wouldn’t be afraid to cut ties with him if he falters more down the stretch.

Barber has 389 yards rushing and six touchdowns on the season, while Kahlil Bell has 97 yards rushing on the season.

The Bears run offense is averaging 122.5 ypg, which ranks 9th in the NFL. They average just about 27 carries per game and 4.4 ypc.

Unfortunately the surging Seahawks are coming to town.

Winners of two straight, Seattle has the 11th ranked run defense in the NFL.

They allow an average of 104.3 ypg on the ground and an average of 3.7 ypc.

The longest play allowed on the ground on the season by Seattle is 32 yards.

The Bears are going to have to run well to have a chance to win.

With a shaky passing game led by Caleb Hanie, the Bears offensive success starts on the ground.

Running early and often on the Seahawks is going to be key tomorrow.

Barber and Bell have shown they can run the ball successfully with Forte on the sideline healing up.

Barber needs to fix some of the mistakes he’s made the past couple of weeks.

The seven-year veteran knows better than to run out of bounds in a key situation against Denver or line up improperly like he did against Kansas City.

Tomorrow at Soldier Field, the Bears know its a must-win scenario.

Expect to see two running backs pumped up and ready to go.

Barber and Bell want to show what they have especially against an above average run defense in Seattle.

Week 15 Injury Report, Chicago Bears Edition

The Bears might be without defensive tackle Henry Melton and kick returner/wide receiver Devin Hester this Sunday against Seattle.

Melton hasn’t been able to practice all week with a shin injury.

It’s rather unfortunate because he leads all defensive tackles in the NFL with seven sacks.

If he can’t play, first-year Bear Amobi Okoye will get the start. Okoye has added four sacks and the Bears are reportedly looking to sign him to a multi-year deal sometime soon.

Rookie Stephen Paea would see increased playing time, while veteran Anthony Adams would be active for the first time in the three weeks if Melton was out.

The other key player injured for the Bears is Hester. Hester re-injured his ankle in practice yesterday.

He wasn’t able to practice today and will likely be a game-time decision on Sunday.

Head coach Lovie Smith said today that they both could play, but Melton isn’t coming progressing much with his shin injury.

Cornerback Charles Tillman returned to practice today after missing Wednesday and Thursday with a knee injury.

Other injuries for the Bears: Left guard Edwin Williams (calf) and safety Major Wright (shoulder) were limited today in practice.

The Bears opponent, Seattle, has only one player questionable for Sunday.

That one player is offensive tackle Jerriel King is questionable with a hamstring injury.

Other injuries for the Seahawks: DE Raheem Brock (calf) and OG Robert Gallery (hip) were able to practice fully after missing practice the last two days.

WR Doug Baldwin (ankle) and LB David Hawthorne (knee) have been able to practice fully the past two days after missing practice on Wednesday.

Seattle travels to Solider Field winners of four of their last five.

Week 15 NFL Power Rankings, Chicago Bears Edition

Here are the Week 15 Bears power rankings from various sites around the web:

Site This Week/Last Week Analysis
ESPN 17 (17) How bad are things going to be if Caleb Hanie and the Bears lose to Tarvaris Jackson and the Seahawks?
Yahoo Sports 16 (14) If Lovie Smith conducts a padded practice this week, why do I get the feeling that Brian Urlacher will find a way to lay out Marion Barber?
NFL.com 17 (17) Most Americans who caught the end of the Bears-Broncos game were touched at the sight of Caleb Hanie encouraging Marion Barber, whose overtime fumble gave the Broncos an opportunity to win. My buddy from Chicago allegedly hurled a bottle of JB at his Matt Suhey bobblehead.
Fox Sports 18 (17) There is no one on the planet that feels worse about the Bears’ loss than RB Marion Barber, but I am not sure why they were attempting to run outside the tackles to begin with. In all honesty, it was a better performance than I anticipated with third-string QB Caleb Hanie under center and star RB Matt Forte on the sidelines.
CBS Sports 15 (15) No Jay Cutler. No Matt Forte. No playoffs. They are reeling right now. They just don’t do enough on offense.
Pro Football Weekly 16 (17) Barber’s gaffes, Tebow’s magic hand Chicago third consecutive loss.
WEEI.com 17 (16) Better luck next year Bears fans.  The injuries to Jay Cutler and Matt Forte are too immense to overcome. The two replacements have been responsible. Caleb Hanie and Marion Barber both have made very costly mistakes.  The Bears have lost three straight and they’ve all been against AFC West opponents.
Pro Football Talk 18 (17) When Brian Urlacher said that Tim Tebow is a good running back, Urlacher should have added that Caleb Hanie is a piss-poor quarterback.
